9/29/09 - MONMOUTH COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE MAKES SIGNIFICANT ARREST

A man wanted on an indictment for aggravated sexual assault of a minor is behind bars at Rikers Island. John Shortt, 48, of Brooklyn, was arrested in Brooklyn, early Tuesday morning, by the Monmouth County Sheriff's Office and members of the US Marshals Office. The crime, which took place in Keansburg in 2002, was recently reported by the victim.

On September 18, the Monmouth County Sheriff's Office and members of the US Marshals New York/New Jersey Regional Fugitive Task Force received the Monmouth County Superior Court Warrant on Indictment, for aggravated sexual assault on a victim less than four years old. During their investigation, it was found that Shortt was living in Brooklyn, where he was arrested without incident.

"I commend these officers who work hard to put criminals where they belong, behind bars," said Chief Michael Donovan. "This is once again, a fine example of positive results, when several agencies share information and work together."

Shortt is awaiting extradition and will be transferred to the Monmouth County Correctional Institution. Bail was set at $150,000.

Monmouth County Sheriff's Officer David Wentworth and members of the US Marshals New York/New Jersey Regional Fugitive Task Force, which includes law enforcement from N.J. State Police, Monmouth County Sheriff's Office, Ocean County Sheriff's Office, Mercer County Sheriff's Office and the New York City Police Department, assisted with the arrest.
